Namaste Cafe smells fantastic when you walk in the door. It feels like a welcoming place where you're going to get a delicious meal. The food was just what I was looking for, but the highlight of the restaurant was their large selection of flavored chai. That will likely be the reason I return.

Namaste is a newly opened (or at least renovated) restaurant on Hennepin in uptown. To start, the decor is awesome, especially at night. The lighting, paint, art, design, music, etc. I was a big fan. The menu offered a lot of vegetarian options of fresh curries and other "Himalayan" dishes, but also had meat entrees and appetizers. The service was great (our server rushed our order out as we had to leave) and the seating is spaciously arranged. One thing that was a little difficult was our proximity to the kitchen. We happened to arrive just as a chef was slicing onions about 10 feet away. Bowls full of onions, enough to make our eyes water. The couple next to us was moved elsewhere, but we stayed and managed for the short time we were there. Maybe avoid the seating at the rear of the first floor if you can. The food was fine overall, I would say. Not outstanding, but not necessarily disappointing. My curry could have used a little more spice, but I suppose I could have asked for it. I would go back and try some new menu items. It's an intimate setting, so maybe better for a date than for a big group outing.

I was more impressed by the atmosphere than I expected I would be. It was open, bright, and I loved the feel of being in a house. Everything had the feel of being kept up well and clean also. We only had about forty minutes before we'd have to leave so I asked if they could accommodate that. They definitely did. Our food was out right away and we had paid the bill and were ready to leave in half an hour. Of course, it was during the day on a Tuesday and they weren't very busy, but nonetheless it was very prompt service.

I was looking forward to spicy Indian/Nepali food and was sorely disappointed. I ordered the vegan curried xyz dish and specifically called out for extra spice. The food came back like a microwave prepackaged indian tv dinner from the local grocery shop. Not only was it not even Minnesotan "nice spiced", it was pretty bland, and looked like throw-up. Go elsewhere if you are looking for spice or good food in general. I just hope the prayer flags by the outside tables call for an overhaul in the menu. Two thumbs down.
